DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Grandma’s Marathon weekend will feature the William A. Irvin 5K on Friday evening and the half marathon and full marathon on Saturday morning.
The expected 60 thousand visitors, the races and other events will result in road closures, no parking areas, detours and lots of traffic.
Duluth Police are reminding motorists that Harbor Drive and portions of Railroad Street will be closed late Friday afternoon and evening and should return to normal by 7:30.
Canal Park Drive from Railroad Street to Buchanan Street will be closed all day Friday for finish line setup.
Those staying in Canal Park hotels will have limited access during the day.
On Saturday, Scenic Highway 61 from Two Harbors to Duluth will close at 4:15 a-m and by 5:30 London Road, Superior Street from 12th Avenue East to 5th Avenue West and parts of Michigan Street will close to traffic.
On I-35, southbound lanes from 26th Avenue East will close at 4:30 and northbound lanes from Mesaba to 26th Avenue East closes at 5:30 with traffic diverted up Mesaba Avenue to 2nd Street.
The freeway and most other roads closed for the marathon will likely re-open by 3:30 p-m.
There will be only limited access to Park Point or Canal Park during the marathon and motorists should follow signs and direction from officers.
Those traveling to and in Duluth should expect high volumes of traffic and temporary delays throughout the weekend.
